Elden Ring Grafted Scion Guide: How to Find It, Beat It, and What It Drops
#1
The Grafted Scion is one of the most memorable early encounters in Elden Ring, not just because of its grotesque design but also due to its brutal introduction during the game’s prologue. For many players, it's their first taste of FromSoftware’s signature cruelty. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about the Grafted Scion—its location, drops, and weaknesses—so you can turn your first defeat into a triumphant revenge.

Where to Find the Grafted Scion
You’ll first encounter the Grafted Scion in the Chapel of Anticipation, a mysterious area that serves as a prelude to the game’s main world. This fight is designed to kill you—the majority of players won’t have the stats, gear, or healing to stand a chance at this point. Dying here isn’t a failure; it’s how the game progresses.
However, later in the game, you can return to the Chapel of Anticipation via a portal on the western cliffs of the Four Belfries in Liurnia of the Lakes. You'll need an Imbued Sword Key to activate the portal, so come prepared. Once back at the chapel, you’ll face the Grafted Scion again—this time on your terms.

What the Grafted Scion Drops
When defeated, the Grafted Scion drops two notable items:
  • Ornamental Straight Sword – A lightweight, elegant dual-wieldable weapon with Faith scaling and solid moveset.
  • Golden Beast Crest Shield – A medium shield with excellent Guard Boost and solid Holy resistance.
While these aren't game-changing items late into the game, they're excellent collectibles for fashion builds or for players running Faith or dexterity-focused characters.

How to Beat the Grafted Scion
The Grafted Scion is fast, erratic, and hits hard. Here's how to take it down:
1. Understand Its Moveset
The Scion uses a flurry of slashes and leaps, often chaining attacks unpredictably. Its most dangerous attack is a spinning barrage that can chip through your stamina or outright kill you if you're under-leveled.
2. Play Defensive, Then Punish
Dodging is preferable to blocking due to the Scion’s aggressive combos. Roll toward its non-sword side to avoid its long swipes, and use its recovery windows to land a hit or two before retreating.
3. Use Magic or Ranged Attacks
If you're a spellcaster or archer, kiting is a viable tactic. There’s room to circle the arena and create distance. Use spells like Glintstone Pebble or Flame Sling to whittle down its health while staying mobile.
4. Bring Spirit Ashes or Buffs
If you return later in the game, bring Spirit Summons or buff items like Flame, Grant Me Strength to help turn the tide. While the Scion doesn’t have specific elemental weaknesses, it’s vulnerable to being overwhelmed by multiple sources of damage.

Is It Worth Fighting?
Absolutely. While the Grafted Scion isn’t required for progression, returning to defeat it is a satisfying way to close the loop on one of the game’s earliest traumas. Plus, the weapons it drops are stylish and unique, adding variety to your arsenal.
The Grafted Scion encapsulates much of what makes Elden Ring memorable: a sense of mystery, overwhelming odds, and the opportunity for redemption. Whether you took your first loss in silence or fought to the bitter end, coming back to take down this many-limbed monstrosity is worth every rune.
